The Six-Week Conservatory
incorporates an intensive, hands-on approach to the
three crucial areas of study in the actor’s development.
Acting, voice, and body are integrated, cultivating
a free, open, instinctive actor with concrete tools
and techniques at his disposal. The course concludes
with a performance of scenes in the Studio’s
theatre. In the final week, acting, voice, and
body teachers, along with Terry Schreiber, evaluate
and work with the actors as they prepare for performance.

Acting begins with Meisner and Strasberg-based exercises designed to ground the actor. Next, scenes are carefully chosen that both suit and challenge the actor. A step-by-step approach to scene work follows, building on the earlier exercises, as the actor explores the physical and psychological truth of the character, relationship, and environment.
Voice and Speech introduces the student to a range of physical exercises to strengthen breath control and support and relax the throat and upper body. This develops stronger vocal tone and resonation, and helps release useless tension. An introductory phonetic approach to improving articulation and diminishing regional sounds is offered to develop the ear for clearer General American sounds.
Body Dynamics, founded on Bio-Energetics, features Feldenkrais, Polarity, Alexander Technique, Pilates, and Soft Tissue Release exercises that promote the flow of energy throughout the body, allowing more freedom, strengthening the connection between emotions, thoughts, and physical expression. Work explores how we build defenses into our bodies and how it gets in the way of our work as actors.
